3 Productivity Lessons From HubSpot Co-Founder

Successful people are productive. These people like all of us have 24 hours in a day. Weather they are successful because they are productive or they eagerly pursued productivity to become successful is very much a chicken-or-egg question. Anyway, Dharmesh Shah, the co-founder of HubSpot, shares his tips on productivity. Read on.

  1. Sleep 30 Minutes More a Day. Common sense and experience tells that a tired person cannot perform at his best. The science also backs it. Dharmesh shares that, an extra half-hour sleep has the highest ROI a working man can get. Lack of sleep has very similar effect as alcohol intoxication. Decide for yourself – 10 hours struggling with something is not very useful if it could be done in 2 hours when you are fresh.
  2. Work One Task at a Time. “Task switching is cognitively expensive”. The human brain can focus at one thing at a time. It is a single core processor. A Stanford research carried an experiment with multitasking. The participants IQ score lowered to average level of an 8 year old child when subjected to multitasking. So, get enough time and spare the cognitive effort for the really important and complex tasks. It might be tempting to switch back and forth between tasks and projects. But, the more you do that, the more time you would need to complete your tasks.
  3. Organize Calendar in Blocks. This is a divide and conquer approach. Break down and organize activities in tasks, then plan the tasks ahead. If you block-out time in advance you diminish the possibility your day to get fragmented by circumstances and running on the fly tasks. Fragmented days lead to losing the big picture and messed prioritisation. It also helps to handle unexpected tasks and requests. Block out enough time for the expected tasks, so that there is enough. Block out extra time for unexpected stuff as well.
