Here are four easy to follow tips that can significantly improve your productivity even when your office is located in your living room:
- Start your day as early as possible. Although it is tempting to wake up just a few minutes before you need to be in front of the computer, enough to wash your face and brush your teeth. Your mind and body need time to adjust and become more alert. Give your body enough time to fully wake up and prepare for the day ahead. Set up a routine you are happy with, whether it is going to be a work out session, or preparing breakfast, the point is to do something for yourself, something you would wake up looking forward to doing.
- Plan out your working day at home. Start your morning with a list of the tasks you need to take care of for the day and order them by priority. If possible set an approximate amount of time each of them might take. Allocate 5 minute breaks every half an hour, because it is proven that working in a smaller amount of time with short breaks in between is actually beneficial to productivity and focus.
- Working from the couch is not a good idea. We usually associate the couch with more relaxed and pleasurable activities, such as watching TV, reading, taking a nap. The same applies to the bedroom. Getting into the right mindset for working at home can be tricky, and lying on the bed or the couch and expecting your productivity levels to be high is definitely counter-intuitive. The best idea is to set up a specific place in your apartment which is solely dedicated to work, still comfortable but with a more professional setup.
- Plan out your evening after a productive day at home. Separating your day with distinctive activities allows you to clearly distinguish between the work part of your day and your personal time for relaxation and fun. This does not mean going out every night, your evening plans could be just a walk in the nearest park, a movie night, a coffee with a close friend, or just eating out for dinner.
